Japanese World Cup star Ayumu Goromaru has been selected at fullback for the Queensland Reds in a Super Rugby match against the Tokyo-based Sunwolves on Saturday.

Goromaru will make just his third start for the Reds in the afternoon match, with first-choice No. 15 Karmichael Hunt unable to recover from a groin strain that ruled him out last week.

The 30-year-old Goromaru has struggled to click with the Reds and has often been relegated to a bench role behind Hunt.

Japanese media said this week that Goromaru, who has played in 56 tests for Japan and scored 708 points, is set to join French side Toulon at the end of the Super Rugby season.

The Brisbane encounter will be the Sunwolves' first Super Rugby match in Australia.
