The School of Medicine of the National University of Samoa received an in kind donation this week from the Rotary Club of Apia.

The donation is part of a community project by the Rotary Australia World Community Services (R.A.W.C.S.) in Northern Australia.

“This hard working team of volunteers acquire, sort and pack the containers of educational and medical goods and ship them in answer to requests from Rotary clubs from around the world. The Rotary club of Apia received two forty foot containers from R.A.W.C.S. for this year and we are grateful to be able to help our local community through this Rotarian partnership,” said Louise Main, the President of the Apia Club.

The donation of fifteen boxes containing textbooks of various medical conditions was handed over to the Head of School and the Manager of Moto’otua Campus by the President and executive of the Rotary Club of Apia.

“The donation is very timely and just what the School needs,” said Tuigamala, the Head of School. In July 2017, a team comprising Professors from highly respectable Universities in Australia, New Zealand and the Phillipines conducted the external evaluation of the School of Medicine programme and the report provided several recommendations for improvement.

It includes amongst others infrastructure, human resources and textbooks of various specialties in medicine.

The medical library at Moto’otua campus is opened to all students with interests in science, medical, nursing and allied health. There are some textbooks for nursing care and other allied health services like x-ray, and pharmacy so the use of the library is not just for medical students it is extended to all health care students and professionals.

“The textbooks will be put to good use and we thank the Rotary Club of Australia and Apia for this generous assistance for our newly developed medical school,” said Tuigamala.
