Fofoa Tafaoga is a green thumb.

The family of the 50-year-from Faleasi’u-uta depends on their land for their daily upkeep.

In his farm, there are cabbages, tomatoes, green peas, papaya and so much more.

“We’ve had this for a while,” said Fofoa.

It’s a daily commitment.

“Just before dawn, we come here and we start our work of planting and taking care of everything that needs to be taken care of. That’s the reason why we are looking at such a beautiful sight right now.”

“Honestly this is good money. All these; earn you enough for a week or more sometimes because our earnings are like $1,000 tala but the lowest income we could make in a week is somewhere around $500.”

“I remember we started off with just papayas and now it’s much more than that.”

“So now most of the time we do delivery because we have people placing orders. I guess having your plantation on the side of the road; does have its perks.”

“Everyday this is like our second home because we always come here in the early morning and go home in the late afternoon. Almost feels like you are working a normal job at an office if you think about the hours we put in to see it grow and come to life. We can only rest for about an hour in the afternoon and then get back to it.”

“We work in a very simple way; we use our hands to work and a wheelbarrow is our means of transport when taking our vegetables and fruit home to the inner village to sell them to people.”

He added “Cucumbers and tomatoes are mostly the things that we run out of first because people use it to make oka.”

“Some people buy these things from us and then they resell it for a profit.”

“I think people need to understand that this is the quickest way to make money and it’s good for the family and it will support you in the future. Yes this goes a long way.”
