“Leaving family behind a challenge”

Leaving his family behind is the challenge Andrew Petero Tone will have to endure and overcome while studying overseas.

Andrew is a recipient of the Australia Awards scholarship, and will undertake a four-year programme for a Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

The father of four from Vaimoso has been working at the National Health Services hospital blood bank section for 17 years, and hopes to develop his knowledge and skills in his line of work.

“I still want to come back and contribute to my work. Use the knowledge and skills I gain from my studies to improve the quality of our work, to upgrade the standards of our service,” said the 39-year-old.

It’s Andrew’s first time to study under the Awards, and is the only student to study a Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science.

“It’s an honour and privilege for me to get the scholarship, especially when you have a lot of people applying.

So I just want to thank the Lord for this opportunity and also the Australian High Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he said.

Andrew leaves Samoa for Australia in January before the semester begins on January 21.
