Eight Police officers who were injured as a result of the fight at Luatuanu’u on Monday have been discharged.

This was confirmed by Police Media Spokesperson, Auapaau Filipo Logoitino, on Tuesday.

The Police officers were part of the Police Tactical Unit team that tried to maintain peace and order during a rugby fight that broke out on Monday between Luatuanu’u and Falefa.

“Thank you to Samoa for your support,” Auapa’au said.

“Both villages have come together to solve this matter for the sake of peace.”

“This decision is also shared by the Ministry of Police so that peace prevails.

“In the meantime, investigations are being carried out by the Ministry and this is why we have come this morning (Tuesday) for proof of reconciliation.”

The Alii and matai of Luatuanu’u were asked to hand over the names of those suspected.

“That list was handed over on Monday.

“At this stage there are more than 10 (listed as involved) youths of the village that partook and there was an untitled man taken in by Police yesterday. It was that person who gave the list of names of other people involved.”

The Ministry plans to continue investigations on why the incident occurred.

“Charges are in respect to evidence and Police work depends heavily on such. And this still continues at the moment,” Auapa’au said.

He emphasised that Police must work closely with Alii and Faipule of villages.

“The Ministry has no plan to use overpowering brutality or weapons but instead hopes for peace in villages as seen this morning (Tuesday) when the two villages came together to solve their differences.”

Auapa’au said the Ministry of Police will continue its work to bring those behind the incident before the law.
