The Police are investigating an incident where a man who attempted to commit suicide leapt from the driver’s seat of a vehicle leaving his children inside as it was heading to crash.

The 45-year-old male from a village in Vaimauga Sisifo is in custody.

The incident followed an argument with his wife during the Easter holidays.

According to the Police Spokesperson, Su’a Muliaga Tiumalu, the man is scheduled to appear in Court on 1 May 2017.

“According to reports he had a dispute with his wife.

“He was charged with causing actual bodily harm, using insulting words and possession of a dangerous weapon (knife).

“On the day of the incident the Domestic Violence Unit assisted this family. The police brought his wife with them but the accused wanted to come in his own car.

“He came with his children and when he got to Tufuiopa, he jumped out of the car and left the kids inside the car. This is while it was still moving so the car crashed into a rubbish bin in the area.

“Luckily nobody got hurt.”

The Police are investigating.

Su’a could not confirm if the man would be charged with attempted suicide.

“There is no charge against him for attempted suicide yet,” he said.

“At the moment according to the Crimes Act 2013 there is no law that can charge someone who is and was trying to commit suicide.

“There was in the Crimes Ordinance 1961 but the new Crimes Act 2013 there’s nothing and it also depends on the circumstances of the case when such incident occurred.”
