Prisoner snaps, threatens to kill

A prisoner, who assaulted a man who was kept in custody awaiting his Court hearing, threatening to kill him, has pleaded guilty to assault.

Daniel Vailopa, who is serving time at Tafa’igata Prison, assaulted Nu’uli Aukusitino, of Faleula-uta, in the presence of Police officers during an unprovoked attack on 3 May 2016. 

This week, Vailopa appeared before District Court Judge Vaepule Vaemoa Vaai where he pleaded guilty to assault.

Lawyer Silipa Uelese appeared on behalf of the National Prosecution Office, informing the Court that they have two charges against the defendant.

One was assault and another was a count of threatening words. 

During the assault, the Court heard that Vailopa had threatened to kill Aukusitino him when they returned to Tafa’igata. 

The charge of threatening to kill was withdrawn.
