An endless supply of food

A plantation not only provides food; it also tackles the high cost of living.

Viliamu Ah-Lung, 43, from Fusi-Saoluafata, shared this view when he sat down with the Village Voice team yesterday.

Mr. Ah-Lung said while the cost of living continues to rise, his plantation has been helpful to him and his family. He said he doesn’t sell any crops from his plantation.

“All the crops from my plantation are all for my family’s food,” he said.

“I have never sold any of the crops from my plantation; we consume all my harvest because a packet of rice is expensive already.

“I believe everything in the shops nowadays is so expensive and it has been unaffordable for most families,” he said while on his way to the plantation.

Mr. Ah-Lung also said life has been so hard because he and his wife don’t work.

“Life is already hard here in our family, but we usually get assistance from our families.

“This is my work, and this provides for me and my family, we’re also happy that we don’t have to rely on exported food when we have Samoan crops to consume.”

Mr. Ah-Lung says he is also working to support his children’s education.

“I have two younger children who will return to school this year and I will try to get money to help prepare them for school.

“That is why I am planning to sell some of the crops so that I can earn money and help my kids get prepared for school.”

Mr. Ah-Lung added families abroad should remember their families living here in Samoa.

“I am glad that I can turn to my plantation for survival knowing that it can provide food for my family.

“I would also like to call upon families overseas to try and remember relatives here in Samoa and send money because the cost of living is high.

“The plantation is the only way that helps the people in Samoa cope with the high cost of living.”
