The anglers are ready, the weather is looking great and now it’s just a matter of the gunshot start and they’re away.

The action starts tomorrow when 21st Samoa International Game Fishing Association (S.I.G.F.A.) International  Tournament gets underway, starting at the Matautu Wharf.

The international fishing game brings competitive fishermen from around the world to test their skill in Samoa’s pristine shores. It was officially opened yesterday during a relaxing gathering at Matautu.

President of S.I.G.F.A.,  Vui Kevin Kohlhase  paid homage to their fallen patron  of the club, the late Tupua Fred Wetzell with a minute of silence.

“Over the years, we have not only promoted game fishing but we have continued to promote Samoa as a prime tourist destination,” he said.

“This tournament is continuing to be the biggest one of its kind in the Pacific.”

But organising it is not easy.

“As is with having any event of this nature, having the right support and backing which we are fortunate to have just makes things easy for us as an Executive and Club to run.”

President Vui also acknowledged the newest Game fishing club base in Asau, Savai’i  which will host their first  social tournament following the international one.

“S.I.G.FA’s mission has always been to promote the sport of game fishing in Samoa.  This year will also mark the inaugural Savai’i fishing tournament hosted by our  newly affiliates club in Asau, Savai’i.”

“It has long been the intention of S.I.G.F.A. to extend its reach to the big island. We are extremely  excited for this event next week.”

He also attributed the success of the club to their sponsors.

“I would like to acknowledge our sponsors for their generosity.  For our major sponsors: Samoa International Financial Authority, Apia Concrete Products, and to all the local business and individual who continue to support our club.”

“Going forward, S.I.G.F.A. recognizes  the importance of growing a sustainable organisation.  Strengthening our partnerships and building new ones.”

“We acknowledge also that without everyone’s support and collaboration S.I.G.F.A. would not be where it is today.”

“Enjoy our seas, respect our marine environment and make new friends while you are here.”

Tuatagaloa Alfred Schwalger, Chairman of the Samoa International Finance Authority (S.I.F.A), officially opened the tournament.
