Land is a symbol of blessings.

Samoa is an independent country with the greatest gift and that is land.

For Filipo Matiu, who was spotted by the Village Voice yesterday while maintaing his land, he said Samoa should be grateful.

“Most families we know have no other source of income besides farming on their land,” he said.

“What will we do without our land?

“The future of our Samoan families depend on it.”

“If we don’t maintain land and make use of it they will be taken away from us soon.”

Filipo said people should make good use of land.

“We need to make sure our land is well taken care of and we use it to grow crops for money.”

“I used to work until my kids started working and then I decided to stay home and work our land.”

The 49-year-old said the land is more than an area of soil.

“I see land as the gateway to other rights and freedom that contribute to protecting my children’s quality of life.”

“This is also their other way out of struggle and it is our duty as parents to protect it for them.”

“So I am still strong and healthy to work on our land and we live a peaceful life here with my family.”

“It’s even good to do chores around here to exercise to avoid being sick.”

The father went on to say the simple of life in Samoa is why he loves the life here.

“In Samoa, if you don’t have money, you can always get food from the land and sea.”

“Most families depend on their plantation for food.”

“And this is another advantage of working on the land because it does not only provide future development but food and money.”

Lastly, Alofagia said his main dream in life is to see his children grow up and become successful.

“Some of my children are settling some are very young. But I pray to God to give them knowledge and help them along the way of success.”

“I will also do my part and encourage them to do well in school so they can have a better future.”

“They are the future of our families, villages and country.”
