Stay safe and remember the reason for the season

Christmas in Samoa isn’t really a Christmas without hearing those rowdy boys walking along the road, blasting their music and drinking till their toes kick their heels.

For Logoa’i Kamaisi, from the village of Saleimoa, this is not a big issue. His only worry is the safety of those who are planning to party away.

Aged 63, Logoa’i’s advice is for everyone to be safe and to party responsibly. He also stresses that we should never forget the reason for the holiday.

“My only advice for Christmas is to try and stay away from trouble this weekend,” Logoa’i told the Village Voice.

“I think the biggest issue for times like these is alcohol. Whenever alcohol is abused during the holidays, there is always trouble but let us all try our best to make this season a trouble free one.”

“For me, Christmas is a time to remember Jesus. It is also a time where family come together; we have those visiting from overseas and others coming from other villages.”

“We all come together into one house and become a family. It’s a time to be jolly and a time to be together.”

“Jesus was born on Christmas so we must also give birth to a new and holy mindset.”

Logoa’i says that this weekend is just like any other weekend. He is simply grateful for every day the Lord blesses him with.

“Right now I am just thankful to the Lord for giving us yet another day,” he said.

“On the subject of Christmas, we have all grown accustomed to days like these; the celebration of the birth of Jesus our Lord and Saviour.”

“Christmas isn’t something new; it’s a time of year that’s been celebrated for many years that have passed. The only thing that’s important to me is to remember the reason behind this holiday.”

“This weekend, we celebrate Jesus and all his wonders; it’s his birthday.”

And as you buy your gifts for the young, Logoa’i says to not forget that the older folks love Christmas just as much.

“It’s a great time of year for everyone,” he said.

“It’s not just for the young; whether you’re old or young, this is a time for everyone to celebrate together and be one as a family.”

“We always buy gifts for the young but it’s also a time that the older folks look forward to. The best gift for the elders is to be with family and friends during this time.”

Logoa’i wishes everyone in Samoa an amazing and safe weekend.

“But yes, that’s all from me, let’s be happy that we have reached yet another Christmas together,” he said.

“Samoa, please have yourself a lovely Christmas and a great New Year. God bless and stay safe.”
