A man accused over the death of a mother and her son in Savaii appeared in the Supreme Court yesterday.

But Sinei Aunei, 42, of Iva and Neiafu did not have a lawyer.

For that reason, the Chief Justice His Honor Patu Tiava’asu’e Falefatu Sapolu has adjourned the matter.

Lucy Sio is the Prosecutor.

Last week before Chief Justice Patu, Aunei was told to get a lawyer.

When he did not have a lawyer yesterday, Chief Justice Patu told Aunei that the Registrar had already approved of his application for legal aid.

Leota Tima Le’avai was therefore his lawyer.

“Sinei Aunei this matter will be adjourned till next week Monday because the counsel who is appointed to represent you is not here,” said the Chief Justice.

“There are also some very important documents that the prosecution needs to finalize and get copies for you and your lawyer.

“You are to be remanded in custody until your matter is called next week.”

Aunei has been charged with murder in relation to a fatal crash at Iva Savai’i two weeks ago where a mother and her four-year-old son died.

He is also facing charges of negligent driving causing death while under the influence of alcohol.
