Everything is money

Time changes but for some people, it seems as though it will never change the situation they are in.

Here is Sefo Amituana’i who believes that there is so much changing around him in terms of development in Samoa but the life he’s in is still the same.

“Everything is moving forward and I am still stuck in the same square that I started from. I am always selling coconuts to earn a living to be able to survive,” he said.

Even though he sells coconuts, the income that he receives is not enough because of the basics  he needs to survive.

The 37-year-old from Mafa in Upolu stated the reason there had not been any progress for him is because of the expensive cost of living.

“Everything nowadays is money. We need money all the time. To get cash power we need the money. To pay for the water bills we need the money. To buy food we need the money. Everything is money, no money then you will have nothing,” he added.

He said goods sold in local shops are expensive and not everything he needs is always available.

It is also a hassle for Sefo to travel to local shops because of the distance and mode of transportwas also a challenge.

Sefo has no children and the only thing he worries about, is how to get by to the next day.

“My heart dreads for those people who are in the same situation as me especially if they have children. Things for them are going to be double the pressure nowthat I face in terms of how expensive life is right now.”

He added there were so many other families like him in Samoa who are constantly struggling and most people were not aware of it.
