It is with deepest sorrow that Governor Lolo M. Moliga and Lieutenant Governor Lemanu Palepoi Sialega Mauga announce the passing away earlier of the late Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Fa’aua’a Hunkin.

Faleomavaega died peacefully at his home in Provo, Utah after a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by his wife Hinanui and family.

The Congressman lived a life of service to his people, to American Samoa, and to the community of the Pacific.

After service in the U.S. Army including serving in Viet Nam, and upon obtaining his law degree, he joined the Office of American Samoa’s Delegate to Washington D.C., A.U. Fuimaono. Following that in 1977 he became Staff Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs.

In 1981, Faleomavaega returned to American Samoa to serve as Deputy Attorney General, before being elected Lieutenant Governor in 1984 along with then-Governor-elect A.P. Lutali.

After serving as Lieutenant Governor for four years, in 1988 he was elected to the House of Representatives of the United States Congress, where he served the people of American Samoa continuously for 26 years.

Notable Committee assignments included the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Natural Resources Committee, along with numerous sub-committee memberships.

Governor Lolo and Cynthia Moliga, along with Lieutenant Governor Lemanu and the people of American Samoa express their sincere condolences to Hinanui and Faleomavaega’s family on the passing of this great public servant who gave his life to serve the people and territory of American Samoa.
