Real intention of Criminal Libel move

Dear Editor,

Re: Criminal Libel in Samoa

The reinstating of the criminal libel law will not help find the identity of O.L.P, it just provides a platform to punish those that speak out against perceived injustices committed by those in power.

A Samoan law will not compel U.S. based Facebook or O.L.P’s web hosting provider to hand over log data necessary to identify him, although it may enable the local I.S.P’s to be forced to do so.

My guess is that this law is focused on closing down the likes of Dennis A. Smith and his www.palemia.com website, where similar sentiments are being expressed with an obvious axe to grind, rather than exposing information in the public interest as the way if O.L.P.

I wonder if the NZ authorities will feel compelled to assist in the prosecution of a NZ based national for the very detailed and potentially defamatory posts against the P.M. and others close to him.

S.P.
