(M.P.M.C. Press Secretary) – Classroom-based Assessment for students is a must from now for all Primary School students.

Its part and parcel of an ambitious policy known as the “Samoa Schools Innovation for Literacy, Numeracy and Science Policy” adopted by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture (M.E.S.C) launched this week.

It was also the gist of a meeting called by the Education Minister Loau Solamalemalo Sio to outline the targets and aspirations of the initiative.

In his address, Loau stressed that the assessments will provide a realistic measurement on students weaknesses and strengths especially in subjects such as mathematics and science.

And the Education Minister is taking the hands on approach.

He says that it’s been the normal excuse to blame the early childhood education for poor grades in the primary school level and by the time the students are about to enter tertiary education, they are not equipped with the proper learning’s to tackle university life.

That said Loau is about to change with the Classroom based Assessment designed to give administrators and educators a better understanding on how to address the student’s weaknesses and implement actions to improve the student’s grades.

Teachers will also play a role in implementing the analysis of diagnostic tool to identify student’s weaknesses and how to address them.

Encouraging students to do better in mathematics and science subjects is another critical component of the assessment plan.

The real test however will be the student’s final exams grades, something that the Education Minister is eager to see because this will reflect the success of the Classroom based Assessment initiative.
