Empowering and enhancing the development of the fa’afāfine population in Samoa is a critical part of Miss Samoa Fa’afāfine 2017.

This was revealed by organisers of the pageant yesterday, during a press conference held at the Samoa Stationery and Books conference room.

Chairperson of the S.F.A, Alex Su’a, said it’s important for members of the public to be reminded that fa’afāfine do exist and they have a vital contribution to make.

“This is all about informing the community that we also wish to contribute to the discussion on commodities, policies and issues that are being addressed and thrown around here and there,” said Mr. Su’a.

“Particularly the issues of domestic violence and as a fa’afāfine advocate the voice of fa’afāfine on domestic violence issues relating human rights are usually swept under the mat.

“However the media have come across it and reported on issues relating to fa’afāfine being banned from their families and villages just because they want to have  long hair

“These are also issues that we need to address and we should also be part of the people who fall under the victim of domestic violence.

“So I guess it’s all about involving fa’afāfine and allowing us to talk about the issues that affect us as well.”

Speaking about the upcoming Miss Fa’afafine this Friday, Mr. Su’a said there would be something for everyone.

 “The night will be for families. Entertainment wise, it’s a time to laugh, not laughing at us but laugh with us,” he said.

 “However, before the main event this week we have a programme that has already been set for the contestants.

“For example today, there will be a speech competition where the contestants will talk about Health, Media and Human rights.

“Then we will visit the children at the Paediatric ward and then do the talent screening.

“These are all charity work done by the contestants as well as the association.”

Communication Officer of S.F.A. Asia Stanley said a big part of the Miss Faafafine is their charity work.

 “This is what we want. We do our charity work out of pure love. There are times when we are being perceived differently by the people and we don’t mind that.

“We just continue to do our work because we know that the work we are doing is not for ourselves but  actually for our neighbours.

“And just to emphasize also that if you really love someone you will put their needs before yours and that is actually part of what we are trying to do here so it falls in line with all the work and efforts that we are trying to bring forth for everyone’s information and for everyone to understand.”

Nine contestants are vying for the crown. Tickets cost $20. The Pageant will be held at the Faleata Gym 1.
