The Palauli District Primary School officially opened its newly reconstructed school building last week, with the majority of funding provided by Japan.

A grant worth up to US$138,995 was provided to the school committee under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project. 

The remainder of the building costs were covered by the school itself.  The project included the reconstruction of eight new classrooms, a staff room and a library. 

At the ceremony, Ambassador of Japan to Samoa, Tuimaugaoali’i Kazumasa Shibuta reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting Samoa’s development needs. 

 “Education is very vital in the development of any nation and Japan will continue to support projects like these to promote and enhance learning,” he said.

He congratulated the school committee for their commitment and efforts that have now paid off with the completion of the new school despite all the difficulties they encountered since the beginning of the project.  “It is my sincere hope that this project will enhance education standards and foster a new generation of bright future leaders of Samoa.”

In closing remarks the Ambassador urged the school teachers, staff and students to ensure proper maintenance of the new facility so that it can be used for years to come.

Japan has provided aid through this scheme for over 20 years now. Since the inception of this scheme, thousands of Samoan people at the village and community level have benefitted from it.
