The Pacific Arts Association conference kicked off its first day of their five-day programme with a keynote speech from former Head of State, Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi on Tuesday.

Pacific artists and academics had the opportunity to take pictures and ask him questions about his most acclaimed writings.

The President of the Samoa Arts Council (S.A.C.), Tuiasau Uelese Petaia, said he was pleased to see the interaction between Tui Atua and young Pacific artists and academics who have been inspired by his writing,

“He is a patron of the arts and is widely accepted as an authority on Pacific culture, Samoan culture and traditions,” said Tuiasau.

“He has been a great leader for the country so there’s still that ‘mana’ that he carries and there’s still a lot of respect for his views particularly on culture, tradition, arts and traditional arts.”

Before the first presentation by Patricia Wallace was given on “A new age Hinemoana” participants of the P.A.A. conference mixed and mingled.

Networking is a major part of this conference and S.A.C President Tuiasau hopes that the outcomes of the conference will result in future collaborations between artists and academics,

“I hope that whoever comes to this conference will go away inspired as they all were this morning and start holding our own conferences as we prepare for the next Pacific Conference.”
