Life in Samoa is a lot harder than people think.

While the environment is paradise, when you have no job it is anything but.

Sau Togafau from the village of Iva in Savai’i knows this.

The 23-year-old spoke about how hard it is to live without a job and having to rely on limited income from the plantation to get by.

He has moved to Apia to look for a job.

“I love the life in Savai’i because it’s peaceful and very calm,” he tells the Village Voice.

“Many families who struggle to make ends meet in Savai’i work hard on their plantation for food and money.”

“The only problem with that is that the plantation takes six to eight months to harvest. So we need to work something else to cover the needs and wants for that period of time.”

“That’s why we need jobs.”

Sau says life is getting harder and harder and the reason why he moved to Upolu is to find a job.

“My father is still working on our plantation for food, but I came here to try and find a job. We have water and electricity bills to worry about and on top of all that, we have the children’s school expenses.”

“The plantation can’t provide enough money.”

Sau he did not want to leave his family.

“But I have no other choice,” he said.   “Its’ mostly here in Apia that the government have the established business that could offer me a job.”

“As you can also see, the majority of families in Savai’i moved here because of the same case. People would stay in Savai’i if there were jobs there.”

Sau said he can work as a handy man.  “I can grow, clean, and I am a very reliable person for any labour work you have.”
