Big game-fishing tourney gets underway

The 25th edition of the Neptune Samoa International Game Fishing Tournament received a grand inauguration at Matautu, where Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa presided over the opening ceremony.

Featuring a formidable lineup of 120 anglers and 30 teams hailing from Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, and Samoa itself, the prestigious event is being held at the esteemed Samoa International Game Fishing Association (S.I.G.F.A.) headquarters.

In her address, the Prime Minister delivered a poignant reminder to all participants to prioritise safety amidst the challenges of the open sea, while commending the unwavering dedication and commitment exhibited by the event organisers.

"Such milestones are a testament to the dedication and passion of all involved in fostering this remarkable sporting event," she said.

"With the participation of two boat teams from American Samoa and three boats from New Zealand, our tournament exemplifies the spirit of camaraderie and competition that transcends borders and unites anglers from diverse backgrounds."


With the official commencement scheduled for Monday, 29 April, anticipation runs high as 30 competing vessels, including those from neighbouring American Samoa, brace for what promises to be an intense battle for the coveted national championship title. 

The opening ceremony witnessed a display of unmatched skills and ferocity as local and international anglers alike converged to kick off the sporting extravaganza.

Speaking with the Samoa Observer , Clyde Fraser skipper of the New Zealand team Brave Heart stated that his team is excited to participate in the event emphasising his immense appreciate for the clubs and the initiative to push forward with the event every year. 

"Something quite spectacular, we are also looking to break any records hopefully" he said.

President of SIGFA, Vaughan Simpson, expressed optimism and has high expectations for the competitors, emphasising the growing magnitude of the tournament year after year. 

"We are excited for the teams participating and I wish them all the best. The tournament is growing bigger every year and it's great to have all our guests here and abroad" he said in an interview.

This year's tournament assumes added significance as it doubles up as a qualifying platform for the esteemed Offshore World Championship Tournament (OWC) in Costa Rica. 

Elation grips the air as the victors of the SIGFA 2024 International Tournament earn the prestigious opportunity to compete in the 2025 OWC tournament, also marking a monumental Silver Jubilee for the Samoa International Game Fishing Tournament.

Simpson extended a warm welcome to all participants and supporters, extending heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors whose unwavering support has been instrumental in bringing the tournament to life.
